WOOLF, Virginia (Author); DICK, Susan (Editor); BELL, Vanessa (Jacket Design).
The Complete Shorter Fiction of Virginia Woolf. Expanded and Revised Edition.
London: The Hogarth Press, 1989.
Description:
First printing of the expanded and revised second edition. Octavo (240mm x 160mm). Publisher’s original black cloth boards, spine lettered in gilt. Housed in the original, unclipped dust jacket featuring the iconic botanical illustrations by Vanessa Bell (originally created for the 1919 Hogarth Press edition of Kew Gardens). Contains nearly fifty pieces of short fiction spanning Woolf's thirty-five-year career, meticulously organized and annotated by Susan Dick.
Condition:
Near Fine / Near Fine. The book is crisp, tight, and square, with sharp corners and bright gilt lettering to the spine. Pages are clean and remarkably fresh, free from the heavy edge-tanning common to this edition. The dust jacket is exceptionally well-preserved; it is not price-clipped (showing original retail price), with bold, unfaded colours to the spine and panels, and displays only negligible, microscopic shelf wear to the spine ends. An outstanding copy.
Provenance:
From the personal reference library of the preeminent Virginia Woolf bibliographer, B. J. [Brownlee Jean] Kirkpatrick (1919–2007).
Features Kirkpatrick’s characteristic, neat personal acquisition mark in pencil to the front free endpaper: "BJK 1989".
An exceptional association copy linking the definitive chronicler of Woolf’s publishing history to the definitive collection of her shorter fiction. Kirkpatrick’s monumental 'A Bibliography of Virginia Woolf' (originally published in 1957) remains the global gold standard for Bloomsbury scholarship. This volume was acquired by Kirkpatrick upon publication for her working library, providing a direct and tangible link to modernism’s finest bibliographic legacy.
