Collection: Barbara Pym

A small group of early editions by Barbara Pym, published by Jonathan Cape between 1950 and 1961.

For many years comparatively neglected, Pym’s work has undergone a steady critical reappraisal, and her early novels—issued in modest print runs and often read to pieces—are now increasingly difficult to obtain in collectable condition, particularly in the original dustwrappers.

The present group traces the development of her early fiction, from the assured debut of Some Tame Gazelle through to the more fully realised social comedies of the 1950s. Copies offered here have been selected with an emphasis on condition and originality, qualities which are becoming notably scarce in the trade.
